Introduction
Many books have presented concepts of leadership. For example, the leadership styles, and situations on how to apply the techniques to makes the leaders fit the circumstances. Besides, the books are used as sources of references and at times quoted by people as encouragement of decisive leadership. This paper is a review of a leadership book. The book selected is the twenty-one Indisputable Rules of Management by John C Maxwell. The summary of the manuscript is outlined, leadership concept, global and domestic implications and Application to Ethical and Socially Responsible Standards.
Summary
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C Maxwell has twenty-one chapters. The first chapter is the edict of lid. In this chapter, the efficiency of the leadership is determined primarily on how one leads. The lid potential is measured by the performance of the leader. The quality leaderships make one have a higher score in the lid scale. The lid can be increased or kept constant (Maxwell, 2012).
The second chapter of the book is ‘’the decree of inspiration.” The law states that the greatness of a leader is not measured on the amount of money that one makes out of a position but on the number of lives that the leader influences positively. Leadership with no authority is not leadership. Therefore, the leaders are called to learn about their characters. For example, the leaders need to have an understanding of the personal nature, the relationship, knowledge, intuition, experience, ability, and past success. Besides, the myth of leadership and leaders are also expressed. These include management, entrepreneur, Knowledge, Pioneer, and position.
The third chapter of by John C Maxwell is the law of process. The rule states that governance matures in days or on a daily basis but not in one day. Maxwell points out that the champions do not become champions in the rings, but they are recognized there. Additionally, Maxwell acknowledges that the ability to successfully lead involves the collection of skills. The skills are learned and developed on daily actions. Two critical aspects that can influence a leader are the daily agenda and how much the leader invests on personal activities of management. Living by the law of process requires that one has to have the ability to write about personal improvement, keep a calendar, and invest on followers as well as creating a culture of growth.
The law of navigation is the fourth law as presented by Maxwell in his book. The law requires that the leader must have a direction. In other words, the leader should have an understanding of the processes and have the inclination to which the activities are moving. As the name suggests, the leader must control the direction of movement towards the goals and objectives. Therefore, the leader must have a plan, mode of transportation, team, workload, supplies, equipment, and gear, the worst problem realized and the process. One should have the trip in mind as a dock and the vision of getting to the place.
The fifth rule is the Act of E. F. Hutton. This edict obliges that one should speak in the way that attracts the juniors to listen to him. Conversely, the leader should also have the opportunity to attend to the juniors. Generally, the real leader addresses the followers, and they listen. The sixth rule is the regulation of solid ground. The law postulates that trust is the underpinning of management. The law requires one to be bold. The law also builds on the character of the individual. Therefore, the strategy verse character works hand in hand in this leadership law. The seventh is the rule of veneration. The societies follow their frontrunners aggressively than they should follow themselves. The leader must have the power and at the same time earn respect from the juniors. The ninth rule is charisma. This law states that who you are is who you entice. This law elucidates that you only get close to you the people with similar characteristics to yours. The leaders should have good personalities to attract people with positive behaviors as the leaders’.
The tenth commandment is the rule of connection. The rule states that the leaders touch the hearts previously requesting for a hand. Before, calling the people to think with them in the same line, it is essential to convince the people and win their hearts. This creates a natural groundbreaking when asking for a hand. The inner circle is the eleventh law according to Maxwell in his book of leadership. The law states that the potential of a leader is determined by those who closely associate to him. The close associates of the leader will behave in the similar way the leader behaves or how the leader would want them to act.
The twelfth law according to Maxwell is the law of Authorization. The rule indicates that only protected frontrunners translates power to others. The leaders who are confident are not afraid of being overthrown or outshined with the juniors. Therefore, most of them delegate duty and authority. The law of production is the thirteenth law. The law states that it takes a leader to raise a leader. The leaders should mentor the juniors with the aim of making them leaders because the current leaders are not permanent. The fourteenth law is the Buy-in law. The law states that people Buy into the leadership, then the vision. Leadership never comes, but it is brought to action through expenses and expenditures.
The fifteenth commandment is the rule of victory. The law states that the leaders should find a way in which the team should win. The sixteenth rule is the law of momentum. The law says that vigor is the leader’s best friend. The seventeenth law is the rule of priorities. Leaders understand that activity is not necessarily accomplishments. The eighteenth law is the law of sacrifice which states that the leader must give up going up. The rule of timing is law number nineteen which says that when to lead is pretty essential as an action to take and where to go. The twentieth law is the law of explosive growth. The law states that to add an extension, add followers while to multiple leads the leaders. The last law is the law to legacy. The law says that the lasting leader’s value is measured with the successes.
Leadership concepts involved
The concept of leadership is based on the definition of leadership and the characteristics of the leader. Moreover, the idea of leadership is also determined by the process of communication and the situations. Analyzing the leadership concepts, one would deduce that there is a close connection between the leadership concepts with the definition and description of the leadership according to Maxwell in this book The 21 Indubitable Rules of Management. According to Maxwell, the direction is defined in the law of influence. ‘’Leadership is not around titles, positions or flowcharts. Leadership revolves around one life impelling another.”
Additionally, the leadership has the concept of communication (Gosling, Sutherland, Jones, & Dijkstra, 2012). The leaders need to communicate with the followers directly or indirectly. Within the 21 specific laws, the concept of communication is coming out. For example, The Law of E. F. Hutton which states that the leaders must have listening followers explains how the theories of communication come out in the book. Communication also builds the relationship between the leaders and the followers.
The concept of the situation is a leadership concept that indicates that all circumstances at a time are different. All the conditions need different responses depending on their nature. According to Maxwell in his book, the concepts of the situation are clear. The third law which states that leadership is developed daily not in a single day is sufficient when explaining the circumstances. The days are different hence the situations are also different. Consequently, the approaches used in one day cannot be used tomorrow but can form part of history that can be applied in another similar situation.
Application to Ethical and Socially Responsible Standards
The ethical and socially responsible standards come out of the book. The leaders must have the duty of taking responsibility while fulfilling the civic duty. Moreover, the responsibilities must be accompanied with ethical principles. The seventh law, the law of respect which states that people actively follow their leaders more than themselves is a good law that can be applied in the ethical and socially responsible standards (Maxwell, 2012). Ethically, the leader should be respected by juniors. The leader should also recognize the followers and fulfill the obligation of serving the followers.
Conclusion
The 21 Indisputable Rules of Guidance by John C Maxwell is a book covering the concept of leadership and the behavior of leaders. The book is relevant to the leaders of the society because it equips them with skills on how to go about the management. Besides, it applies to the Ethical and Socially Responsible Standards. Current leaders are called to embrace the concept of leadership as outlined by Maxwell.
