Would the calculated percent yield of alum be too high, too low or unchanged if the alum was not completely dried on the filter paper? Explain. Would the calculated percent yield of alum be too high, too low or unchanged if the solid aluminum was not completely dissolved in the first step of the reaction? Explain. Would the calculated percent yield of alum be too high, too low or unchanged if the ethanol was spilled before pouring over the alum crystals after the reaction has taken place? Explain.
Expert Answer
Answer
If the alum is not completely dried than the calculated yield will be too high because while calculating the weight of alum, it will include the weight of water present in it as a result the calculated weight will be high. Thus yield will be high
If the solid is not completely dissolved than the yield will be low becsuse only the dissolved part will take participate in reaction and not the complete sample as a result yield will be low compared to what we expected from initial amount taken.
No change in yield if the ethanol is spilled before pouring because reaction has been completed
