What is network security –

It refers to the policies, rules and actions which are imposed on network-accessible resources to prevent and monitor unauthorized access, alteration, misuse or change of the network.

Fundamental concepts of network security –

Backup – The first basic concept of network security is backup. Though it is not really a security function, but acts as plan to retrieve the data and information in case of security breach or any error. There are threats which can not be totally stopped so in such cases only treatment is to restore the network using backup.

Firewall / Router – If we have have more than one machine in your network. any normal equipment available at the local computer store is not the right choice for the network. They may be fine for home but for even a small network we need some advance features like firewall or router, which not only give selected access to specific users but also protects the network and computer system from various breaches and threats.

Content filtering – The best way to fight threats is actually not to face them i.e. to encounter them. Sometimes the user accidently clicks on some content which contains malware. If we will apply a content filter, it will let you block these types of links.

Operating system updates – This mostly happens with windows. Since there are hundreds of updates from Microsoft every month, and many of them are very critical to the point if not applied, so no other measures can protect you. For these issues using Windows Server Update Services(WSUS) by Microsoft can help you by giving custom preferences.

Administrative rights – Since if the administrator collides with a malware or virus, the the threat will have full privileges to access anything on the network with the read and write permission too. This could lead to terrible damage. So the administrative rights should be given to a separate user secured with passwords and so.

Anti-Virus Software – Suppose, the network is breached by a threat or virus. In such cases we need an anti-malware or anti-virus software which will detect the virus or threat and will fix or remove it accordingly. There should be anti-virus software pre installed on the network devices for pre-detecting the viruses and stop them before they cause some damage.
