Transport Planning: Travel Behaviour Analysis

Introduction

A series of three interlinked workshops are used in this class to explore the collection and analysis of information on people’s travel behaviour. In Workshop 1 you designed a travel survey. In Workshop 2 you looked at survey administration, either collecting data yourselves or attempting to communicate to the client issues regarding data collection. In Workshop 3 you will use outputs derived from the survey to undertake a travel behaviour analysis.

The overall goals of disaggregate analysis are understanding the determinants of travel and designing effective transport policies. To achieve these goals we need to study travel-activity patterns and the context within which travel decisions are made.

This workshop asks you to write an analysis report for data collected from Workshop 2 and provide policy implications for promoting active and public transport modes in commuting for employees and students of the university. Remember, the client wants to know how our employees and students are arriving at university, how long it takes, what changes would motivate them to shift to active or public transport modes.

Weighting:  this assignment will comprise 10% of your final mark

Length:  600 words. Tables, figures and/or graphs can be included in addition to the 600 word text. The reference list will not be included in the word limit.

Format:  This assignment should be provided as a single Microsoft Word document (.doc) or as a single Acrobat Reader file (.pdf).

Text must be 1&½ spaced using the equivalent of either 12-point font Times new roman) or 10-point font Arial and must incorporate a cover sheet including the student’s name, student number, course name and number, an accurate word count, and the date of submission.

Penalties: will apply to late submissions as per the University policy on late submissions, and also for submissions of improper length (submissions with > +10% words will be penalised!).

Requests for extension of time to submit must be made in writing to the Course Convenor.  Where the request is made on medical grounds, an appropriate medical certificate must be submitted. The request for an extension should be lodged by the due date for the assessment item. A copy of the extension request should be attached to the assessment item when it is submitted.

Assessment criteria

The criteria by which the workshop submissions will be assessed are as follows:

	The report uses diagrams, tables, maps, graphics or other means of representation as appropriate to communicate ideas effectively (15%)
