Summary of the film Erin Brockovich Essay

Erin Brockovich is a true story film directed by Steven Soderbergh, whose role was played by the famous actress, Juila Roberts. Erin Brockovich’s real life was put into film in order to set as a good example for people, specifically, the leaders, to practice ethical leadership and conviction when one knows that what one is fighting for is for a selfless good cause or for the benefit of common good.

The film’s theme is all about the importance of leadership quality which does not mean formal attire, manner of speech, and intimidating appearance but in this film, Erin showed a different perspective of a true leader: a good, responsible, and effective leader has to defend one’s stand when the leader is sure that one is right (Duke & Byrd 2008).

Body

Erin Brockovich, being a single-mother and portrayed by Julia Roberts, showed a magnificent attitude towards persistence of attaining her goals. At first, she just wants to get employment to sustain her children’s needs, but the outcome was doubled by her inherent and sincere attitude of helping her neighborhood and insisting the justice which she believes for the good of the citizens.

She instigated a case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) which costs the latter a billion dollar for its project of discharging their waste which could cause the contamination of water in Hinkley. Such attitude of the main character should be regarded as that of a true leader (IMDb.com 2008).

Leadership style used in the movie/ story

Erin Brockovich showed an inspiring quality of a leader. It was obvious that Erin showed an ethical example of true and effective leadership as she showed conviction for what she believed in together with the evidences of her investigated fact that the PG&E project is the cause of the proliferating and prevalent sickness in the neighborhood of Hinkley. Thus, Erin, should be emulated and rewarded with affirmation which the good job she has done which saved many lives of the citizens. Inspite of the fact that she is financially striving herself, she presented an objective and unbiased attitude of morally doing what is right and is for the greater good, even if the PG&E company would invest a large sum of money in their place.

I could relate personally to Erin’s professional way of handling things at work. Although Erin does not fit in the law firm, she managed to prove herself that she knows what she is doing and she could contribute to the organization by loving her job.

Similarly, I could attest that I practice the same thing at work, I make it a point to exert my quality performance in every task that I was assigned to. For instance during Junior high, I was assigned as the project head of our campus journal or newspaper, I practiced my initiative to check on the writers’ work before deadline and I monitor their papers to prepare the rest of the articles for editing and proofreading before it would be inserted in the software for lay-out and publishing. The result was good and all the articles were submitted in time before the paper’s deadline and for the students to have a copy before the semester ends.

Conclusion

Ethical leadership is the most important quality of true leadership for if a leader believes and practices ethics and morals, the rest of the virtues shall follow. In this film, Erin Brockovich’s style of leadership was depicted to result in a positive outcome. This film showed a true quality of a selfless leader that has to be emulated by everyone.
