2) In your opinion, what would be the best solution to the ethical dilemma presented?
Expert Answer
1. The main ethical issue covered in the video:
The ethical problem described in the video is about various committee members of congress having their relatives doing the lobbying job where they persuade members of the congress government to endorse or pass legislation that would help or benefit their group. According to CBS news investigation, they have identified 19 federal lobbyers who are closely related to members of Congress committee and they are all family members. Restrictions are lobbyers cannot lobby their relations. Senators & Congress men to be employed for a beneficial salary which is a conflict of interest. Such lobbying activities were found in departments like Technology communications committee, coast guard committee, defense committee, healthcare, railroads committee where all lobbyers are their own family members of the committee members. Members of Congress disagree stating family business is separate from nations business. But this is a clear conflict of interest and is an issue of speculation.
2. The best solution to the ethical dilemma presented:
One best solution that I can think of is to have a legal ordinance to be passed that ensure the law where Congress committee members who are representative of the functioning of government and the lobbyers who influence members of the government to endorse the legislation should not be from the same family. If any violations are found, details from watch dog as shown in the video to be taken as directions and clarify the allegation against both committee members and the lobbyers.
