Stealth Marketing: How to Reach Consumers Surreptitiously article
Stealth marketing:- Stealth marketing or undercover marketing or buzz marketing is a marketing strategy that is used to marketing or selling a product to the audience without knowing them they are being marketed to. There are many strategies that are used for the stealth marketing to advertise a product in the market.
Six strategies that we found to be most unethical with examples are:-
- Undercover Actors/Actresses in Celebrity marketing:- With the help of celebrity marketing Sony Ericsson hired actors and actresses and pay them to market their mobiles to attract audience.
- Product Placement:- Many brand products had been put in movie scene to attract the audience. For example FedEx in Cast Away.
- Fake Media:- Fake blogs showing some products has been launched in many other countries but the information about the blogger is not able to access. Jim and Laura created a fake blog about their visits of Wal-marts across different states.
- Fake Controversy:- By spreading fake news over news channels and through social media just to capture the emotions of audience. For example: Starbucks famous Christmas mug collection was just a simple solid red cup but the controversy over news channels makes it very popular.
- Marketing on blogs by paying bloggers to write about you:- Some people market their products by paying bloggers to write about their product on their personal blog which is unethical as per the marketing rules.
- Building web sites that recommend your product but don’t disclose the information who built them:-Some people build fake websites to market their product without any personal information, that is also a wrong way to do marketing about your product.
If i have to market my product then i can go for the celebrity market and all the strategies discussed above but under the ethics of marketing. Transparency should be there to make your product a brand product in the market. Fake commitments and fake marketing strategy no longer work for your product. So market your product but under the ethics of marketing only.
