Writing Assessment and Analysis
Writing is an art which is indeed a difficult and a complex process. Langan 2013 assert that proper writing needs careful planning, proofreading, revision and conducting a background study before commencing the writing itself. Since the beginning of taking the writing units, I must say, the quality of how I write has significantly evolved. Initially, I had difficulties with punctuations, sentence structuring, transitions and paragraph distinction among other issues. I have come to realize that writing in such a manner was laborious. With constant practicing, many of my initial challenges have been substantially reduced. Now, I have more confidence in the content I write and the audience of my papers.
My strengths in writing from the assessment indicate how well I can write short sentences. I also make use of transitions from one idea to the other using paragraphs. The vocabulary and sentence structure are some aspects of my writing skills. Topic sentence and closing sentences help me make my paragraphs rich and easily understandable. However, there is still room for improvements in my writing since it was evident that I have a problem in proofreading and editing the work have written. Such weaknesses were visible from little grammatical mistakes which are easy to detect. Proofreading my work is difficult since when I re-read the work, it’s like am writing again and I feel that I am doing the rewriting.
To support my writing further, I would use Smarthinking and Turnitin. Smarthinking offers online tutoring for students hence is useful in guiding writers to perfect their skills. Specifically, it is essential since it gives the students concepts about a topic, or the tone, structure, and methods of how to write a research paper (Ashford-Rowe, & Howarth, 2014). It is vital to the extent that it is available for students to use 24/7 thus can be used both at school and at home. Have been able to consult on subjects that were not clear at school, and gained significantly.
On the other hand, Turnitin is significant to the extent that it helps in protecting the intellectual property. In the sense that it assists student not to copy the work of other people which have been published without acknowledging the author (Orlando, Hanham, & Ullman, 2018). It is useful in helping a writer develop content from other published work by citing directly, paraphrasing or quoting a source in developing content to write. After writing, the work can be submitted to Turnitin, and if it has been plagiarized, then the publisher or owner of the work would be identified. Other sources which are critical in writing includes Grammarly, Cite this for me, and EBSCOhost.
Grammarly is particularly special since it helps a writer develop proper grammar in the course of the paper. It can show misspelled words, poor adjectives, misused words and sentences which are fragmented. Cite this for me is another writing tool which is critical since it helps in the citation of work done. When references are taken, it helps in the correct format of citing the work. It can help a writer to cite videos, journals, audio, TV program, radio talk show, and other publications. EBSCOhost is another database which is crucial since it has research materials which can be used to develop content for writing. It has some published books, journal articles, and research papers which enrich a person’s content creation, vocabulary and sentence structure.
