What role do VLANs play in wireless networking, and why are they considered an advantage to implementing security?
Expert Answer
VLAN:-Virtual Local Area Network
is having same characteristics and attributes as a physicial Local Area Network(LAN).
VLAN is a seperate IP Sub-Network which allows for multiple networks and subnets to reside on the same switched network services that are typically provided by routers.and it is becomes its own broadcast domain.
VANs Proide enhanced security .In a VLAN network environment, with multiple broadcast domains, network administratators have control over each port and user.a malicous user can no longer just plug their workstation into any siwth cport and sniff the network traffic using a packet sniffer.
The network administrator controls each port and whateer resources it is allowed to use.
Here are a couple non-exhaustive ways that VLANs can be used to improve security:
- They limit the scope of where broadcast traffic or flooded unicast traffic is transmitted. If Host A is not on the same VLAN as Host B, it will not see any information that Host B may broadcast.
- You can create VLANs with no gateway at all, which limits a device to access only other devices in that VLAN. It also prevents access to those devices from outside the VLAN.
