Needed information for the problem
Conversion problem: The molecular weight of urea [CO (NH2)2] is 60. The molecular weight of blood urea nitrogen/serum urea nitrogen (BUN, N2) is 28.
Ratio and proportion problem: 60 g. mol. wt Urea/28 g. mol. wt BUN = mg/dL Urea/ mg/dL BUN
Problem
If a BUN is reported to be 15 mg/dL, what would be the urea result in mg/dL? mmol/L?
Show all work please, and report to the nearest tenth. Thanks
Expert Answer
As it is given that :
60 g.mol.wt BUN/28 g.mol. wt BUN =mg/dL urea /mg/dL BUN
let x be the amount of urea in , when BUN is 15 mg/dL.
=> 60 / 28 = x / 15
=> x = 32.142857 mg/dL
=> and conversion of mg/dL to mmol/l is 1mg/dL/18 =1 mmol/L
=> x = 32.142857 / 18 = 1.7857 mmol/L.
