In your own words, list and describe the commonly used wavelengths in today’s fiber-optic systems: multimode fiber, single mode fiber, and fiber to the home/business.

Expert Answer

Fiber Optics system are provide a well stable and equipped communication mode which is replacing copper wire system. Fiber optics system emits light pulses to send signal from one end to another using fiber optics, instead of transmitting electronic pulses to be sent from one end to another using copper wire.

The commonly used wavelengths in today’s fiber-optic systems are
• Multimode fiber: (850 and 1310) nm
• Single mode fiber: (1310 and 1550) nm
• Fiber to the home/business: 1600-1625 nm

Multimode fiber: Multimode fiber is one of the optical fiber which carries concurrently multiple rays within optical fiber at different angle of reflection. It is commonly used for communication over small distances like communication within a building or within a campus. Multimode fiber contains a large core diameter that helps in propagating multiple rays. Multimode fiber gives high speed and high bandwidth and it is less costly.
It has high tolerance power and angle of propagation. They are used to carry the light from a source of laser to that required place.

Single Mode Fiber: Single mode fiber is composed of 2 fibers of glass at a diameter of 8.3 to 10 microns facilitating one mode of transmission. It use to send only single signal with wavelength of 1310 and 1550 nm as a carrier due to which it is holding higher bandwidth than multimode fiber. It has a source as light having narrow spectral width.
It has advantages for use in several applications where signal is sent at multi-frequency requiring only one cable to be used. The cost to establish single mode of fiber optics is more, even it has smaller core than multimode Fiber optics. It eliminates the distortion occurred from overlapping light pulses delivering minimum signal attenuation and maximum speed of signal sending within the fiber optics cable type.

Fiber to the home/business: Fiber to The Home(FTTH) or Fiber to The Business(FTTB) is a mode where fiber optics cable is planted from a central location to various buildings, residences or business to deliver high speed internet access. This is most widely used communication media technologies used these days.
It mostly works over a signal transmission wavelength of 1600-1625 nm and delivers connection speed of 100 mbps.
