It is an interdisciplinary field of engineering that focuses on

1. how to design and manage complex systems over life cycles.
2. Involves wholistic proces to utilizes systems thinking principles
   1. to organize a multi disciplinary body of knowledge. It may involve co ordination of requirements engineering, reliability, logistics, coordination of different teams, testing and evaluation.
   2. It deals with work-processes, optimization methods, and risk management tools in such projects.

The systems engineering process is quite different than a manufacturing process. Manufacturing process orients itself on repetitive activities to achieve high quality outputs with minimum cost and time. Systems engineering process starts by discovering the real problems that need to be resolved.

For example, manufacturing od an aircraft from scatch may require systems engineering. It involves multi disciplinary approaches ranging from mechanical to electrical engineering components as well as involves other branches like aesthetics, ergonomics, material sciences etc.
