Imagine you have a 5-week business commitment between Boston, MA (BOS) and San Francisco California (SFO). You fly out of BOS on Mondays and return on Wednesdays. A regular round trip ticket costs $400, but a 20% discount is granted if the dates of the ticket span a weekend. A one-way ticket in either direction cost 75% of the regular price. How should you buy the tickets for the 5-week period? Three possible alternatives are presented: a. Buy 5 regular BOS-SFO-BOS tickets for departure on Monday and return on Wednesday of the same week. b. Buy one BOS-SFO, 4 SFO-BOS-SFO that span weekends, and one SFO-BOS. c. Buy one BOS-SFO-BOS to cover Monday of the first week and Wednesday of the last week and 4 SFO-BOS-SFO to cover the remaining legs. All tickets in this alternative span at least one weekend. The restriction on these options is that you should be able to leave BOS on Monday and return on Wednesday of the same week. Develop a graphical or tabular model (e.g. Gantt Chart) of the problem to help structure/illustrate the problem. Can you find a fourth alternative?
