For example, when a TV commercial is run in national television channel of a country with a population of 100 million and it is believed that the number of people who will watch this advertisement is 40 million, it is concluded that 40 percent of total population have watched the advertisement.

As mentioned, if one rating point is one percent, it means that each time the advertisement is run it wins a 40-rating point. Supposing the advertisement is shown each Sunday night of a month i.e. total 4 times, it will be calculated as that the advertisement is earning a total point of = 40 x 3 = 120 Gross Rating Points (GRP)

GRP is thus = Rating point earned during each advertisement x Number of times the advertisement is shown.

This is how Gross Rating Point ( GRP) can be more than 100 if one rating point is one percent of population.
