Management focuses upon the efficient allocation of resources to get the best results, whereas the leadership focuses upon the motivation to employees and drive them into the right direction in pursuit of organizational objectives. Further, the management is about the hierarchy, employee and employer relationships, but the leadership takes a wider role as mentor, guide and problem solver. The scope of work for leadership can move go beyond the formal working relationship.

Management and leadership can be distinguished from each other, but these roles are so often overlapping in an organizational setting. For example, a manager can motivate employees, give autonomy of work, praise employees for their contributions and mentor the employees to derive a superior performance. On a similar note, a leader can work as a spokesperson of the management and can elaborate the management ideas. A leader can counsel employees and allocate resources at the work Place. Hence, a leader can also perform the managerial task. Thus, the roles are interchangeable and overlapping in nature.
