Discuss the challenge of sustainability as it realted to HR management?
Expert Answer
Sustainability has always been a challenge from the management perspective as the management has to make a balance between short term profitability as well as the long term viability and competitive advantage of the organization.
HR management also faces the challenges posed by the sustainability. The first challenge is the development of code of conduct for employees and different organizational policies. The purpose of these guidelines is to build a sustainable organizational culture and employees should behave in a particular way, in line with the organization’s image. Though, it may incur costs in the short term and productivity can also suffer in the short run. Hence, creation of the balance is a challenge.
The second challenge is the training and development of human resources. It incurs costs and the next line of managers as an outcome of these T&D programs may not continue for the organization. But, the training and development is very important aspect of the HR management and resources must be invested to get the optimum results. It will give a sustainable competitive advantage in the future.
The third challenge is the reward system and its implication upon the cost, profitability and employees’ conduct inside and out of the organizational setting. The reward system is good to get the best out of the employees. Though, it also encourages them to behave in a particular way that could fetch the higher rewards even if it comes at a cost of customer satisfaction. Hence, organizational vision is compromised.
