At times, health care providers feel that they are most knowledgeable about patient needs and preferences. Why is it important to engage both patients and loved ones during the treatment and discharge plan process?
Now a day’s healthcare is also moving towards a system centered on people’s needs and preferences which has the potential to bring multiple benefits for patients, the health care system and the nation. When patients, their families, other care givers and public are active participants in giving proper care then outcomes of the treatment would be more favourable.patient, patient families and clinicians all together need to be involved for optimal care. Clinicians supply information and advice based on their scientific expertise in treatment and intervention options, along with potential outcomes. Patients, their families, and other caregivers bring personal knowledge on the suitability—or lack thereof—of different treatments for the patient’s circumstances and preferences. Information from both sources is needed to select the right care option. This process is time consuming and complex, and requires broad involvement of the patient, the family, and the care team to consider all of the issues affecting the patient’s care.
