We are inspired by great water falls and geysers, we bathe in it, swim in it and some like to listen to it run. For a natural resource that is so important to us, and considering there is so much of it, why and how did we let bottled water become such a fad? What STAKEHOLDERS are most affected by this and should SHAREHOLDERS care? Can we both address and contribute to ethical dilemmas like this, or do we need to be absolute in our reactions? Think back to the previous You Tube video on the chocolate industry, remember when change did come from free trade chocolate, it came in the form of a water pump? How difficult is it to be ethical when you really want your m & m’s and bottled water? For example, someone decides they will no longer drink bottled water and so they not only stop buying it, but they also sell any shares of stock they own in companies that contribute to the industry. Is that absolute reaction required for change? Is change even necessary?

In the above paragraph, it is authentically stated that majority / three fourth of the earth comprises of water. As it is aptly said that water is life and our day to day living sustains basis the same. Though water is indispensable to us, bottling of water became a fad in view of the rising levels of pollution and the awareness that normal available water is not suitable for drinking.

The stakeholders affected by this move would be the manufacturers and the users both. In this context, the government along with the private sector / manufacturers could jointly work to address this. The initiatives undertaken should have the community / people welfare at heart first and foremost. This will ensure that adherence to ethical standards is done even when the bottled water of a brand is being marketed.

In perspective of the mentioned example, such an extreme action is not needed in terms of either shunning usage totally or disposing off stocks / equity shares of the aligned company. Change is essential towards improving ways the usage of bottle water is being done and that it should be positioned correctly to the target group. Here the regular co-ordination of activities at the public, government and private industry level would serve the purpose. As this would result in facilitating the right balance of consumption of bottle water by the masses / concerned stakeholders understanding its pros and cons.
