Week Four Assignment – Independent Project Final Paper

Greetings David,

Thank you for your timely submission this week. I really appreciated the effort you put forth and the perspective that you displayed. The University uses a plagiarism tool called turnitin.com. What can be confusing about these matches is that they are not always from the references that you used in your paper.

A fun exercise is to go to wikipedia and search any topic that would interest you. Copy one sentence randomly from the wikipedia entry and paste it into Google or Bing. You will see there are many different websites that use that material. In turnitin.com, it may not always be accurate from the exact source that you used, but it does show a high match overall.

A common misconception among students is that as long as I put an in-text citation in the sentence I can copy and paste from my source material, or all I have to do is change a few words here and there and it is paraphrasing.

Please take a look at this link:

The above link guides you to a website on the types of plagiarism and the different types and forms that it may take. What students often have a difficult time doing is putting complex scientific theory into their own words, but we can work on this concern. I want to provide you with a link to help you work on your paraphrasing. Please take a look here:

If you work through the above examples, I think this will help you on your road to writing about these concepts in your own words. What I think you may have done here is unintentionally plagiarized.

This was a very high match. While you did use in-text citations to show that you were pulling from other sources, but you did this incorrectly. You copy and pasted verbatim or you copy and pasted changing one or two words and using an in-text citation. This is not accurate. If you are going to copy and paste, you have to use direct quotes.

Even if your paper was quoted appropriately, the plagiarism match is well above 50%, which can mean several things.

You did not read your source articles sufficiently to put them in your own words

You did not give yourself sufficient time to complete these issues

Often students complain that they have never been brought up on this issue previously or that this was unintentional. However, I want to remind you that I posted an announcement that I will check for plagiarism and intention or unintentional plagiarism will not be permitted. Please be aware that this is a graduate class. Claiming ignorance of appropriate APA citation guidelines or not being able to paraphrase is not an excuse and this will not be accepted. Please understand that National University has a Writing Center that can assist you and even help you with drafts to look for these issues. It is the student’s responsibility to make use of these services.

Below if the evidence of the academic honesty issue.
