Milton Snavely Hershey, most people hear that name and think about Hershey’s chocolate. They assume that Milton Hershey started the Hershey Chocolate Company. Of course they are right, but who really was Milton Hershey? That’s what this paper is all about. Milton Snavely Hershey Went from being bankrupt at thirty years old, to one of the richest men in America. He owned a candy business and an enormous factory, which today is one of the most famous candy businesses in the world.

He was most famous for his chocolate bar, but he also founded a school, which is still open.

The personal Information of Milton Hershey is very interesting and contributed a lot in his life. He was born on September 13, 1857 in Derry Church, Pennsylvania. However, he moved to Nine Points in the Lancaster Area when he was nine. Milton’s Family life wasn’t the happiest and is pretty complicated. His childhood was very unstable because his dad was always thinking about some “get rich quick” scheme, which most of the time failed.

It was also unstable because his little sister, Serina, died when she was four. Fannie Snavely and Henry Hershey, Milton’s parents, were both very strict Mennonites. Therefore Milton and Serina before she died were raised in the Mennonite faith. When he was forty-one, Milton married Catherine Sweeney, who was unable to have children. Sadly, Catherine died in 1915, when she was still pretty young. Milton’s education was very limited. He attended many different schools in Pennsylvania.

He only completed school through fourth grade because his father wanted him to learn a trade early. Milton Snavely had lots of different jobs during his lifetime. First, Milton Hershey was an apprentice for Samuel Ernst, a printer at Gap. Then after he quit printing he was apprenticed to Joseph Royer, a candy shop owner. IT was there that Milton realized what he wanted to do with his life, sell candy! After that, Milton Hershey established his first candy business in Philadelphia, which failed. In Colorado Milton got a job with a candy maker, where he learned some valuable lessons about making fresh candy. Milton launched a second business in New York City but it also failed.

Milton finally got his big break after failing several more times and he started a caramel industry that became very successful. After he had been running his caramel business for a while, Milton became very interested in making milk chocolate. He sold his caramel industry, and using the chocolate machines they already had (for coating caramels with chocolate) and buying more chocolate making machines from Europe, started a chocolate industry called the Hershey Chocolate Company. That company is still around and is still making chocolate even though Hershey the man is gone. Milton Snavely Hershey died at the age of eighty-eight on October 13, 1945 in Hershey Pennsylvania, the town he had built.

Milton Hershey accomplished many things in his life that made him memorable. One of the things he accomplished is that he made and sold his chocolate candy in a business that became very well known, the most well known in fact. Against all odds, Milton Hershey, who came from a very poor family and was a failure in business for a few years, started a business that became one of the most successful and well-known candy business owners anywhere. Milton Hershey also made many contributions to society. One of those contributions was that he opened a school for orphan boys so they could get the education and guidance they wouldn’t have otherwise. Another thing he did was found a town. You see, he built a big factory in a rural area, and to have a factory you need workers. So Milton built a town around his factory for the workers in his factory to live. Hershey, Pennsylvania a town named in his honor is full of parks and things all founded by him.

Many qualities describe Milton Hershey. For instance, He was very daring and determined because he was daring enough to try to sell his caramel and was still trying to sell his caramel even after his caramel business had failed. Also, he wad daring enough to sell his caramel industry, which was very successful, and try to make money from his chocolate industry, which turned out quite well. Milton and his wife were also very compassionate. They opened a school for orphan boys because they couldn’t have children of their own. A quote of Milton Hershey is “I often hear people say that children are not what they used to be. But I have the conviction that they rare just what they have always been. Perhaps it is the parents who have changed”, which shows that they actually cared about the children in their school. That seems very compassionate to me.

Milton Hershey had many obstacles he had to go through in his life. One obstacle in his candy-making career is trying to make his caramel business take off. He failed three times before he finally started making money and he started making chocolate. Another obstacle is that during WW1, sugar was scarce. This created much of a problem for Milton Hershey as he tried to get sugar for his chocolate industry. He eventually solved this problem by starting his own sugar cane field in Cuba.

In conclusion Milton Hershey was a very compassionate, daring stubborn man who did great things for our country. Sure, if it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have Hershey’s chocolate, but he did much more than that. He used the money he made from the chocolate to help people in his community. He provided jobs, and a town, and showed his compassion by caring about the people. The lesson Milton Hershey taught us is that if you have a dream, you should follow it, and to not give up on that dream, so matter what. Milton Hershey has definitely inspired me to not give up on my dream. What about You?
