M3A2 Critical Review: Best Practices for a Reduction in Workforce

The process of workforce reduction is an essential aspect in an organization geared towards improving the organization’s performance, efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness. The decrease in the workforce happens from time to time in an organization (O’Hagan et al., 2008). The best practices of the reduction of the workforce require the management to be thorough and plan efficiently in order to achieve the expected outcomes of the strategic implementation. The management needs to define the process in various forms including work redesigning and work reduction strategies (Cameron, 1994). These inform the reasons for the workforce reduction and putting employees aware of the process. Also, the process needs to prepare a strategy for deciding which employees are to leave the organization, as well as, the exit procedure. Also, preparing the send-off package for the employees is essential and preparing them for a transition to the career.

The positive impacts of the reduction of the workforce in an organization entail eliminating redundancy, duplication, and improving the efficiency of the labor force within the organizational requirements. Also, improves productivity and cost effectiveness in the employee management and compensation.

The adverse impacts of the reduction of the workforce in an organization entail low morale of the employees after their colleagues leave and fear of being laid off as well, in turn, inducing low productivity of employees (Ware & Grantham, 2010). Also, organizations are bound to incur substantial sum of money and resources as they send a section of its employees out of the workforce through compensations.

The most credible alternatives to the reduction of the workforce include expansion of the company to find new roles for the redundant employees. As well, merging and acquisitions to expand the operating grounds and accommodate a large pool of employees.
