Life situations may lead to developing our networking and Essay

Life situations may lead to developing our networking and leadership skills. For me, leadership is about service to humanity. All my life, I have lived by this standard. I started active volunteering for social work after graduation from the university and have been influential in my community since then. My leadership skills are evident in the following instances.

In university, I organized reading groups with classmates. Upon graduation, I joined Namu Clinic as a Laboratory Scientist where as part of my job, I tutored new job recruits and students on attachment as well as synergized with the management for improvement on laboratory equipment for expanded routine investigations.

A year later, I was appointed Medical Assistant by the resident physician. As a medical assistant, I supervised over 9 nurses and IT students and affected lives positively through medical counseling.

To broaden my societal reach, I founded the “UAC Youth Association – (UYA)” in 2012, an organization established to promote youth development and foster unity among community members.

With this, I organized focused group seminars, skill acquisition programs, and medical outreaches amongst others. For example, I organized and funded programs such as HIV AIDs, Typhoid, Malaria, and Ultrasound scan awareness and testing.

I have directly mediated peace and security processes on this platform or delegated the President to do so. For instance, following the 2013 “Ombase” vs “Fulani” militia crisis in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, I reached out to leaders of youth groups, clergies, elders and community heads from both sides of the divide including government officials and members of the media to negotiate peaceful co-existence. For more complex cases, I consulted with the Patron of UYA, Chief Harrison, a very influential figure in society. In August 2019, I led a contingent of UYA to meet with notable CEOs over a report of street hooliganism in Ungwan Gayam. My strategy to secure law enforcement agents was adopted to comb the menace.

In 2012, I joined Richlam Pharmaceutical Limited as a Sales Representative. Being a new company with marginal profits and a high staff attrition rate, the company could not remunerate employees according to prevailing market rates, and with high market competition, the job was daunting. After a brief sales check, I realized I could boost sales via an improved strategy to conduct seminars for healthcare professionals with a promotion drive to boost sales. I persuaded the CEO on this and he obliged and within the next 4 months, the company’s sales from my territory had multiplied above expectation. With a sustained boost in sales over the next 6 months, the company increased my commission from 12.5% to 15%.

At SANHealth Hospital, I work as a Medical Assistant. Here, I see patients for examinations, investigations, diagnosis, and management. As part of my job, I instructed and monitored nurses during patient management as well as hold lecture classes with them.

If awarded, the Chevening Scholarship will enhance my leadership skills for senior managerial positions upon returning home while looking forward to becoming an influential global leader via Chevening global network.
