learning Essay

Learning is a change in our intellectual behaviour as a result of experience, in fact learning process can be described by several steps such as:

Rote: which consists of the ability to call up to mind an information that has not been understood

Understanding: which latterly means consolidating the meaning of something that has been learned

application: which is practicing what we have understood and learned

finally: correlation: to assemble what has been learned , understood and consolidated

our memory is composed of 3 stages: encoding, consolidation and retrieval

Let’s focus on the first stage which is encoding because it’s considered to be the most important, because what we are referring to is learning new information

The brain is composed of billion neurons in a form of a network, the information that has been perceived by our sensorial system is sent through axons and finally transmitted to our short-term memory where it will be processed and stored, therefore in order to consolidate information we need to ensure its circulation via synapses.

Imagery

A technique that consists of attaching a mental image or a picture to a verbal idea

Example Let’s suppose that you’re studying an enzyme function for example and now to attach that to an image that I can easily call up to mind , since it’s a long peptide chain I can visualize a snake in a dark cave holding a rat as an enzyme with a target in its binding site , so it depends on the image that you create , i can say that it’s a perfect image to call up to mind but that may not work for you so you need to create your own image and What you’re doing is that your forcing your brain to encode information in a way that the word enzyme is processed and remembered by the visual spatial memory located posteriorly in your brain.

And you can combine unrelated items to one image

The second technique is context which refers to what comes before or follows a word

Let’s take the same word enzyme for a mutated enzyme, what I could create is to is to envision an image of a big red eyed snake that swallows humans, so I enriched my memory for that word by providing more semantic meaning to it, it is big, red eyed and swallows humans.

And we can combine the two techniques together

So, at Tessler foundation they’ve been doing this research by teaching these 2 techniques to people and what they found after is a significant improvement in their memory abilities to visualize information in a manner that can be more memorable to them and they proved that this tremendous finding can change brain functioning In a short period of time and it work for anyone but it requires a lot of effort and practice.
