I am in the process of revamping the whole training program which is revolves around terminology like ladies, gentleman, Mam, Sir, instead of inmates, offenders, criminals, and jail-bergs. My way of enhancement is to empower the positions of my facility and allow the Officers to become leaders in changing the paradigm of control, and focus more on change and recidivism. Administratively the staff was hands off, and officers were not being professional in realizing that their positions are bigger than corrections. We as leaders are not just here to be an authority figure but one that promote change and rehabilitation. Since I have been place as the Warden I have had mixed reactions on my new approach on how to interact with the inmates or offenders in my facility. Recently I had a young lady who had been in prison for 12 years return to prison after being out only 45 days. She was made out of a mockery by the staff and I immediately communicated to them. We failed this young lady because what did we do as a facility to change her course of thinking after having her in our direct supervision for 12 years? My question to the class is treating prisoners like animals within a institution, the norm of being in prison? As a leader am I fighting a uphill battle in trying to implement the motto “ that it’s bigger then corrections”, and it’s more then just about control. Am I taking the wrong approach as a leader for trying to enhance my officers knowledge from a more conventional authoritative figure, to more of a mentor, a role model, and a resource that can be used to incite change and rehabilitation, instead of showing disrespect and frowning down on them because they are prisoners?
