For the Module 2 SLP assignment you will continue to apply the concepts from the background materials to your own personal experiences in the workplace. Think carefully about Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership model and the four leadership styles of Directing, Coaching, Supporting, and Delegating. Then consider the styles of one or more of the supervisors you have worked with, and reflect upon whether or not their style changed depending on the situation.

After doing some reflecting on your own experiencing and reviewing the background materials, write a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following issues:

  1. Take a look at the four developmental levels D1-D4 discussed in Avery (2004). Which of these levels best describes the developmental level of your supervisor’s full team?
  2. How would you describe the tasks required of your supervisor’s full team? Are they structured or unstructured?
  3. Overall, how well does your supervisor’s leadership style match with the developmental level of their team and the characteristics of the team’s tasks? Consider the Situational Leadership model for developmental level and the Path-Goal model for task characteristics in your answer.
  4. Based on either the Situational Leadership or Path-Goal model, do you have any recommendations for how your supervisor could change their leadership style?

ANSWER

The level that describes the team

The leadership style in my organization believes in the cyclic levels of employee advancement.  The employee is recruited into the organization while raw. Immediately one is employed, the person is natural in the field. Therefore, the person is first trained to be a qualified person. After training, the new worker is guided and promoted through the stages and motivation and incentive that one should redress as time increases. Avery presents the stages of development of the management of the employee. The stage that is more useful to my supervisor’s full team is the D1.

The D1 is the first developmental stage that is characterized lower competence level (Avery, 2011). The standard of commitment is high at this juncture.  This starts with the new employees. At this stage the employees are raw, and most of them do not understand how the company operates. The employees are excited about the job and the promotion in the section. The level is considered useful to the leadership in my organization because it guides the operator using the situational leadership. The employees are trained and promoted from stage to stage as they advance while still in the organizations.

Task and structure in the team

The task in my supervisor’s team can be described directive. The mission aims at the shaping of the behavior of the employees in the organization. The mission starts with raw employees and makes them more useful part of the society (Avery, 2011).  On the other hand, the task has structures. The structure entails directing. This involves the guiding of the employees. The next step that forms the structure is the coaching. In the coaching stage, the workers are trained, and responsibility is assigned to them. The structure also entails the support. This is the stage that the employees require that the employees are backed by their leaders during the events as well as activities within the organization. Lastly, the delegation of duty forms the structure of the organization in my supervisor’s leadership.  Therefore, the structures of my supervisor’s leadership are trained by the four stages.

Leadership style and matching with the level

The leadership style that is chosen with my supervisor represents the stage D1. The leadership style is situational leadership. The leadership is involved recruitment and training of employees.  The employees are also promoted and awarded incentives as they proceed with the work. The stage D1 that is chosen from the paper involves the training of the employees and making them responsible such that they cannot deal with the different task with the organization with themselves (Avery, 2011). Comparing the leadership style and the level of my supervisor is similar to situational leadership style.  Both believe that the employees need training. Additionally, the transformational direction and level D1 requires that the employees are promoted as their levels advance. Therefore, the leadership style of transformational is similar to the level that represents my organization.

Recommendations

Basing the argument of the situational leadership, one would recommend that the business continues with the D1 till the employees understand the organization. Additionally, one would suggest that a leader should motivate the employees and reward the good performance. I would recommend the team to continue training of employees and appraising them.  One would suggest that the leader should adopt the delegation of duties among the employees who are mature and have understood how the business system works.
