Development of Mass Readership

This needs to be 2 pages long in MLA format. Citation texts/page numbers is required within essay. I attached 2 PDF’s that my professor uploaded with his notes on the novel.

This is the essay prompt:In Northanger Abbey, Volume II, Chapter V (Chapter 20, pp. 106-7, in the online version), Henry teases Catherine about her expectations of the Abbey, describing what he believes she anticipates to find at the Abbey.  In Volume II, Chapter VI (Chapter 21, pp. 110-11 online), Catherine discovers a mysterious, immense, heavy chest, and then later in the same chapter, discovers a high, old-fashioned black cabinet (pp. 113-5 online).  In each of these passages, Austen uses a recognizable trope (a “trope” in this sense refers to a commonly used literary image, device, or plot twist) from gothic fiction. After reading the selections in the Norton Anthology from Walpole’s, Radcliffe’s, and Lewis’s novels,  in no more than two pages, choose one image or trope (e.g., the mysterious castle, the scheming patron, the hidden drawer, the lost manuscript, the secret passage, the stormy night, the pure and innocent heroine) from those novels, and compare and/or contrast it with the similar device in Austen’s novel as it appears in the passages listed above.  What does Catherine’s reaction to these objects tell us about her misinterpretation of her experiences in the Abbey?  In other words, how does Austen use this trope or device in her novel to expose the limitations of Catherine’s interpretive framework as she applies it to the Abbey?

In this and subsequent informal assignments, it is important that you not only explain your answer, but that you provide evidence to support your answer by quoting relevant passages, and then explaining what this quoted evidence means, how it works to produce that meaning, and how that meaning supports your claim.  There is no “right answer” to these questions, but there is a correct method of answering, which involves explaining and supporting your answer with carefully analyzed relevant evidence.
