Deontological Theory
The Republic of Liberty, a democracy, has two religious communities. The Divers believe that whole-body immersion is essential for baptism, while the Sprinklers think that sprinkling is sufficient, and whole-body immersion is heretical. Both hold that persons who are not correctly baptized are ‘unnamed’ and that unnamed bodies are inhabited by demons, bent on working ill in the human world.
Divers comprise about 70% and Sprinklers about 20% of the total population, though Sprinklers are a local majority in the northwest corner of the country. If both sects are allowed to the free exercise of religion, it is very probable that hate speech will lead to individual, and then subsequently organized acts of violence where either sect has a local majority. To what extent is it permissible for the majority (here Divers) to make the Diver sect the official religion of the Republic, and proscribe the Sprinkler sect—forcing its members to convert or leave the country, on pain of fines or imprisonment?
