Assess the effectiveness of own communication skills in establishing Essay

On average 6 people scored me a 3 on these questions:

• Kiran communicates on both an emotional and at activity based level – feelings and actions

• Kiran is comfortable reading other peoples non-verbal communication

• Kiran is complemented on her clear and direct style of communication

So for the above, 6 out of 12 scored me a 3 which indicates there is definitely room for improvement. From their feedback I learned that I can come across as being very task oriented and may not always understand their reasons for the delays.

Some felt pressured with the amount of work they had which made them feel anxious as felt everything needed to be done at once. Another said that said they were not comfortable with me asking for updates in an open office. They said that it made them feel conscious of others hearing and often were not able to communicate freely. From their feedback I need to work on my non-verbal skills and need to be more aware of my surroundings.

I have also since introduced a backlog system on VSTS which adds tasks that are not being worked on a backlog. This should help with the workload pressures as this allow them to concentrate on only the tasks that are active

7 people scored me a 3 on this question:

• Kiran communicates complex ideas with ease

My role is quite technical and often have quite complex scenarios to explain. It can get quite challenging as not everyone is at the same level of understanding. After speaking to all 7 who marked me a 3, it came to light that I needed to use more visual illustrations, like diagrams, flow charts, power point presentations and video conferencing for those based on other sites etc. to explain complex scenarios. They also said that I often assume they know more than they do. From this feedback I need to work on my visual communications and use more than one medium to explain complex scenarios. I also need not assume and go through the whole scope and also follow up with the individuals the next day to ensure that they understand.

To conclude, to be an effective communicator we need to bear in mind that we have to be effective at all points in the communication process – from “sender” through to “receiver” – and you must be comfortable with the different channels of communication – face to face, online, written, and so on. (Mind Tools, 1996-2019) For communicating the common sense of purpose always remember to keep it visible, get everyone on board, Value employee engagement, Use a variety of channels, and choose your stories wisely.
