System configuration explanation

Barbershop

Barber shop can be seen as a single phase system which has single to multiple services which depends purely on the size of the shop. There is a low arrival rate of the customers due to various options presented to the customers and hair cutting is done almost once in a month. The pattern of service which is used follow first come first serve system(FIFO). No priority scheme is implemented. The service times are characterized as negative exponential distribution.

Car wash

This system can be seen as a multiphase system as the car is given for wash at one station and then these are cleaned in other stations and returned to the customers at different station. This system is a single channel queuing system as only location is used for dropping the car for wash and are taken back at other single station. The service is again done on the basis of first come first serve (FIFO). The frequency of arrival is quite frequent with random service time and it is characterized as negative exponential probability distribution.

Laundromat

Laundromat is a multi channel and multiphase system as there are number of stations where one can use the service of washing machines at different places and it uses the multiphase pattern. The rat of arrival is quite high and service time is random. The system has the average waiting time and services are provided at a random order.

Small grocery store

In any kind of small grocery store, there is only one individual who entertains the customers thus it can be seen as single channel queuing system. This can also be seen as a single phase system as all the service requests and service fulfillment are done at a certain station. The average waiting time is more as there is only one person dealing with many customers.

Large department store (e. g. Wal-mart)

The large department stores can be seen as a multiphase and multi channel system as there are number of queue with several stations for various products and services. This main purpose of doing this is to reduce the average waiting time which resulted from the higher traffic. The biggest issue in this system is to effectively manage the customers. The rate of arrival of customers is quite high and it is not possible for a single individual to entertain such a huge number of customers.
