Q1
a) Describe and provide diagrams to explain how the three switching tiers in a traditional campus network operate, including how the switching network tiers can be collapsed.

Expert Answer

In Three-Tier Collapsed Core Design there are three tier switches core, distribution and access layer. The main thing while designing network model is that heirarichy. Even we can design without heirarichy but still network models with efficient heirarichy are considered to be best model with multiple protocols and technologies. Cisco has developed Three-Tier Collapsed Core hierarchy model to help us design, implement and maintain effective network. The following are the three layers:

ACCESS LAYER- Access Layer used to control users and access to the employees on the network. This layer allows end user device also to have access in the network. It is recommended that Most devices used are cisco 2950-3750 switches which uses fast ethernet cable.

DISTRIBUTION LAYER – This later serves as the mediator between core and access layer. The primary functions are routing and filtering. It also performs WAN access and it determines how packets can access the core.

CORE LAYER- This layer is the backbone of network model and the responsible for transporting netwoek traffic. This model uses gigabit ethernet so that it must be fast. It aggregates traffic from all the distribution devices
