Over the past few years, there has been a lot of controversy about the best approach to school security (let’s assume the Middle School through High School setting). What is your opinion and perspective on effective and ineffective school security measures? What do you think of magnetometers in schools? School Resource Officers? Physical security measures (even to the point of some schools purchasing high-end access control and surveillance systems)? Parent involvement? Drug-free zones? and other approaches that have been taken or considered?
Expert Answer
MAGNETOMETERS: these devices are primarily used in schools to find the hidden undesirable objects on a person’s body.Incase a undesirable object is detected ,an alarm is produced and the signal can be audible and visible .But magnetometers are generally not very effective if they are used on purse or schoolbags. So this is an impractical approach to detect any sort of weapons in schools.
SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS: these people are responsible for providing security and protection in the school and they are employed by the local police or some local agency so that safety is increased in schools for everyone. These people also conduct presentations on youth based issues.
PHYSICAL SECURITY MEASURES: video survillenace cameras, closed circuit television systems, weapon detected systems and access control systems are used in the school for beter security and protection.Though they dont have any major inovlvment in preventing any serious mishappening.
PARENT INVOLVEMNET: the involvemnet of parents in their child’s lives will impact the child in being more self alert and and aware of their surroundings. This way a child can take care of himself.
DRUG FREE ZONES: the drug free zone sign boards should be used by schools so that children are prevented from the use of any drug .This is required for better environment and better future.
