Mary has a laptop that uses a 64-bit processor. She complains that she cannot run older 32-bit applications on her laptop, but her friend can run these older applications on her 64-laptop. What is the problem

To run 64 bit OS, we need a 64-bit processor and to run the 64-bit application we need both 64-bitprocessor as well as 64-bit OS.
AS Mary’s processor is 64-bit, it can have either 32 bit or 64 bit OS(Not mentioned in the Question). As the application is 32 bit, it is fully compatible with both 32-bit OS and 64-bit OS. also it is fully compatible with a 64-bit processor.
There should be no problem as Mary friend also has no issue.
Mary should check whether she has installed the 32-bit system and try to use 64-bit application. In only this case, it will not work.
