Published by LinkedIn on October 26, 2014

Leadership: “Exercising of influence over others on behalf of the leader’s purpose, aims or goals.”

They discussed both the perceptions first is-

Leaders are born not made

According to the Great Man theory and Trait theories believe that people inherit certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership. It was also said that brn leaders are different from artificial leaders.

But it ended up with the question that “If leaders were solely born what is the point of the rest of studying leadership or management?”

Now the second perception-

Leaders are made not born

According to Behavioural Theories it is believed that people can become a leader through the learning process. Its the set of skill which leads to leadership which can be practiced and mastery over it with the time. One example was also given, that “The military embraces bthis doctrine which is evident through its leadership training programme.”

Here questions arises “Can enrolling for a programme on management and leadership makes someone a leader upon completion? Can Chrisma, Influence, Integrity and the ability to inspire be taught? Will the granting of a certificate and a few letters after one’s name make them a leader?”

The Verdict:

Leadership is not science rather than its an art. It is innate traits , refined and perfected over to time with education, training and experience.

Here also is a debate on this question. Some think that leaders are born who posses the social intelligence and charisma that motivates others to work with togetherness. While other thinks that leaders are made where they learn and build the skills through practice and experience.

So which is the true -born or made??

It seems that both the camps are right.

Well researchers have found that most leaders have innate traits but mostly through learning and hard work. In fact, one study ftom The leadership Quaterly on heritability and human development estimated that there is 24% genetic and 76% were learned.

Another study was out from the University of Illinois, stated that the value of genetics verses learned beahviour at 30%/70%. Which concluded with the statement that even those of us who are not by birth leaders can acquire the skills of leadership.?
