How do you think the use of varied media affects his view of himself as an artist as well as other people’s view of him as an artist?

Is it important for society to be able to categorize an artist? Why or why not?

Discuss Nauman’s statement: “Whatever I was doing in the studio must be art.” Is this statement different from “If I am in the classroom, then whatever I am doing must be educational”? Explain your reasoning.

Expert Answer

 1) An artist is a person who reveals the mystic truths to the world, it could be anything, either by developing a portrait, or by using various media effects or be it anything different and unique. An artist does things differently, and show different things to the world through his eye and imagination.

So, in my opinion, using varied media effects will also equally recognize an artist as a truly artistic person. Working on a multi media should not differentiate him from the other artists. Anything which is developed differently, uniquely and innovatively is an art. So, he should definitely view himself as an artist and so are the other artists.

2) Yes, definitely. A person who has a unique art should be differentiated as an artist. Because, being an artist is a recognition, that not every one would get. When a society recognizes an art, it recognizes the artist behind the art as well. When this recognition happens, an artist will be categorized and shall be given a prominent place in the society. Because, an artist deserves a special place in the society.

3) Both are two different statements. An artist will only sit in the studio when he has to do something creative. Because, the sole work of an artist is to create, innovate and produce an imagination which he shows the world from his eyes. So, an artist works on his creation in the studio.

The other statement “if i am in the class, then whatever i am doing must be educational” may not hold true. Not every time a classroom teaches education. It may also teach a sport, or students can have a leisure time in class, or just a brainstorming session on the general or political issues etc. It need not necessarily be an education. A classroom is a place to learn, but the learning could be anything. It may be educational, or may not be educational.

So, the statement “whatever i was doing in the studio must be art” is different from the statement “If i am in the classroom, then whatever i am doing must be educational”.
