Explain how a Gantt chart differs from a CPM/PERT network, and indicate the advantage of the latter.

Expert Answer

Following are the differences between the Gantt charts and PERT charts:
  1. Gantt charts were introduced in the year 1917 by Charles Gantt. Gantt mainly deals with the tasks being sequenced in order to complete the project. On the other hand PERT charts were made and introduced by the US Navy in the year 1950; in order manage the large and very difficult projects.
  2. Gantt charts mainly aim to focus on the time which is need for completing a task, and on the other hand PERT chart mainly focus on the inter job relationships.
  3. Gantt charts are represented in the form of linear or it is a bar chart, and on the other hand PART chart is a flow chart which comprise of parallel networks of the jobs done individually.
  4. Gantt charts are simple and straightforward and are not up for the projects which require any kind of changes and on the other side PERT charts are difficult and are made up of small portions of the project.

Advantages:

Gantt charts present the baseline of a project. Each and every activity can be positioned at a point at the time of the project in order to see that the project is targeted. Gantt charts also have advantages as the resources which are being used can be added to the charts. Gantt charts are very easily understandable. PERT diagrams provide with the complex network relationships in a more complete way and make it easily identifiable for the predecessor and successor relationships.
