*an analytical paper (develop a topic in an open-ended question format. Present multi-faceted information and offer a well-supported critical analysis in a neutral stance.) Ex: Ancient Greek Science.

*an interpretive paper (choose a topic that is based upon an established work, such as an example of literature. Utilize evidence from the work of literature or some other framework to back up thesis). Ex: Readings in Sophocles’ Oedipus the King.

*an argumentative paper (choose a topic and establish a position in the thesis. Present both sides of the issue but persuade the reader to adopt your argument.) Ex: Causes for the Fall of Rome.

Papers must be typed, DOUBLE-SPACED ONLY throughout the paper with 1-inch margins and with a 10-12-point font in Times New Roman or Arial. Do not put extra spacing between paragraphs or start the paper half-way down the first page. Ensure you write in third-person style (do not use ‘I’ or ‘you’ in the paper) and remain objective; do NOT include personal opinion or judgement in this paper. A minimum of three sources must be used (do not use the textbook). As college students, you should be using book sources or articles from scholarly journals (if using Gale, cite from the source, not just ‘Gale Group.’) If you elect to use eBooks, do so ONLY through the SJR State library database system and cite them as you would normal books (e.g. with page numbers). You may use at most ONE online source if it is of academic origin (usually websites with ‘.edu’ address.) Understand that websites that lack academic background will not be accepted. Some of the websites to avoid referencing under any circumstance:

*Wikipedia,,, etc.

*Any online encyclopedia (except or another university site)

*Sources meant for high-school or elementary-school levels

Papers will be graded based upon general understanding of the topic, college-level analysis of the subject, proper sentence structure and organization, grammar, punctuation, tense, and flow. Papers must fulfill the required length (a letter grade will be deducted for each page shorter than required length). In addition, citations must be correct and appropriate: footnotes, with author, title, & page number. Ensure the final paper is below the similarity index of 20% when submitting paper to Turnitin via Canvas.

  • A-level papers must be proficient in all areas (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, flow), have a strong thesis statement that is supported throughout the paper by your sources, not include personal views, have an introduction and conclusion, show college-level analysis, fulfill the required length, have correct formatting, and have proper CMS citations imbedded in the paper with a bibliography of all sources used.
  • B-level papers will have few or no errors in grammar, tense, and sentence structure, but may lack in strong analysis or have a weaker thesis, yet still have proper citations and complete bibliography of sources. Papers must have an introduction and conclusion, but they may not be strong. No personal opinions are included.
  • C-level papers will show little college-level analysis or understanding of the subject as well as elementary understanding of sentence structure and organization, grammar, or tense (e.g. using present tense for past tense subject). Papers may lack an intro. or conclusion. Citations must still be present within the paper along with bibliography.
  • A failing paper will show no understanding of the topic, no college-level analysis, is full of errors in sentence structure, grammar, and tense usage, as well as show little or no organization or flow to the paper. They may be essentially a paper based on the writer’s opinion on the subject. Failing papers indicate lack of writing at the college level. Citations are incorrect or incomplete. To avoid failing papers, utilize (found in the Student tab) and/or the Academic Support Center on-campus.

No citations OR bibliography will mean a zero for the assignment. Papers may be re-submitted for UP TO HALF-CREDIT pending approval of the instructor. The reference style in Humanities is CMS (Chicago Manual of Style); refer to the CMS Citation Guideline. For more information on  Greek & Roman Humanities check this;
